This is ALS (with Courtney B. Vance)

Emmy and Tony Award winning actor Courtney B. Vance is all too familiar with ALS. His beloved mother Leslie Vance was diagnosed with ALS in 2012 and died from it in 2017. As the disease progressed, Vance watched his mother slowly lose her ability to move, to swallow and eventually, to breathe. All the more painful for Vance was knowing that as the disease slowly robbed his mother of her mobility, speech and independence, she remain mentally alert and fully aware of how the disease would steal her life. Vance is a leading advocate for the ALS movement, using his uniquely powerful voice to raise awareness and to support the work of The ALS Association. In this PSA, Vance shares his experience with ALS and urges viewers to do whatever they can to support The ALS Association in its mission to find a cure, provide support and care for people with ALS and their families, and to empower those impacted by the disease through policy and research funding.

Challenge Me – A Campaign Highlighting the Impacts of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

In the summer of 2014, over 17 million people took the Ice Bucket Challenge and raised $115 million for The ALS Association. Since then, we’ve seen new genes discovered, new potential therapies developed, new assistive technologies created to help people with ALS, and the expansion of care services around the country. However, there still is no cure and no significant life-extending treatment for ALS. The Challenge Me campaign highlights the advancements made since the Ice Bucket Challenge while challenging the public to do anything and everything to finish what we all started.

Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw has recorded a series of public service announcements for The ALS Association about ALS and what’s happened since the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. One of these PSAs features ALS Ice Bucket Challenge co-founder Pat Quinn. While millions of Americans took the Ice Bucket Challenge, many may not know what’s happened since or the progress that’s been made, especially as we approach the five-year anniversary of the global phenomenon in 2019.

The Reality of ALS

While most people have heard of ALS, particularly because of the Ice Bucket Challenge, they may not know much about the disease or the impact it has on people living with ALS and their families. “The Reality of ALS” campaign aims to show glimpses of daily life with ALS and devastating toll the disease takes on families. The spots feature three actual people living with ALS and their families. The spots reflect the grace, beauty, and dignity that so many people with ALS possess, while also acknowledging the harsh truth that this disease is cruel and fatal.
